Lecture-Recitals and Lecture-Demonstrations

The Alto Flute

This presentation intermingles lecture, repertoire, and demonstration in a coherent flow.

The lecture includes information about "the basics" of alto flute (and variants among different altos), the history of large flutes and Theobald Boehm's alto flute, repertoire (major orchestral excerpts, Boehm's arrangements, compositions for alto flute), modern developments and extended techniques, and pedagogy (how to approach the instrument, its tendencies, benefits to the flutist).

"Dear Composer-Friend..."

A presentation dedicated to all my composer-friends who have said, "maybe we could meet sometime and you can show me what the flute can do?"

This presentation includes performances on piccolo, flute, alto flute, and bass flute, plus extended technique demonstrations and information about composing for the flute family.

Luciano Berio's Sequenza I for solo flute

Berio's Sequenza I is over fifty years old, and it remains one of the most important flute works of the 20th century.  It is equally challenging to learn and captivating to experience, and this presentation takes a look at various aspects of Sequenza I, including its impact on the flute world and some of Berio's compositional elements that are important to understanding the work.

Establishing a Foundation for Improved Flute Intonation

Inconsistent flute intonation is a frequent challenge in bands, and often the careful adjustments made in one rehearsal are lost by the next. When helping a section, I tackle the issues that get in the way of stabilized intonation: posture, embouchure, air usage, tone, and vibrato. This clinic presents simple strategies to improve a flute section of any age and ability level.
